A perfect depiction of obsessive love July 12, 2010 Tiffany (GREER, Seychelles) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was a little surprised at the reviews of this book. I thought it was very realistic story about a sociopath and his prey. A previous review said that Hope should have left much sooner, but how would you know how you would react in the situation, being manipulated on a regular basis, always confused and terrorized. I think it was a true depiction of how a person in this situation would react after what they are up against. It is disturbing but it is true and most likely hits home for people that are in the same type of situation. It doesn't get more real until you are there and have gone through what she went through. Hope is a very honorable, admirable person and came out of it stronger, whereas some people are not so lucky. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, read it in 2 days and feel a little more knowledgeable about the subject, thanks to Danielle Steel's beautiful storytelling. She never fails to deliver.
I loved it...I can't believe it received such bad reviews! July 23, 2010 H. Stephens 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I truly loved it...I'm not a big romance fan, and if you are, this isn't for you. Yes, as someone mentioned in their review, it is a bit disturbing, but it's well written, and the characters and situations are defined very well. In my opinion, it's one of her best written books.
Excellent about taboo matter! July 3, 2009 Sissel M. Østdahl (Norway) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
" Falling in love with a sociopath was one of those experiences you never forgot, if you were lucky enough to survive at all." (ref. page 326)
It all takes place among the rich and privileged, as so often in Danielle Steel's books, but for this story it is actually an advantage.
The matter of involvment with a sociopath is not an easily accepted topic, particularly not so among the educated upper and middle classes. But nowhere are sociopaths likely to do more damage than when they perform their mostly phsycological evils to proud victims in golden cages. Victims staying silent, knowing that their stories will seem too crazy to be believed by any sane person. Among people with less or no education sociopaths are more visible, since their methods are usually of a more physical kind, leaving their victims literally hurt and bleeding.
The first part of the book tells a beautiful story about a coup de foudre between two people in their forties who connect perfectly and plan to get married after having known each other for only four months.
Well recognized photograher Hope Dunne gets an assignment to do a portrait of famous author Finn O'Neill. They fall head over heels in love and soon Hope shares her time between her New York loft and Finn's impressive ancestral home in Ireland. Everything is bliss and simply too good to be true.
After six perfectly happy months, the surface is however starting to crack and Hope's life is soon alternating between joy and suspicion, and slowly turning into terror.
The nightmare this all to perfect love story soon turns into, is scary and as the book says, hard to believe unless one has experienced it oneself.
It is a bold subject Danielle Steel has chosen for this book, which starts out as such an easy read and develops into a scary nightmare very seldom neither written or talked about.
Readers may find it all unbelievable and rather crazy, but "Matters of The Heart" is straight forward and scaringly to the point.
Highly recommended.
Review of Matters of the Heart August 1, 2009 V. Cournoyer (everywhere, USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
If you are a Danielle Steele fan you will find this to be one of the best of her collection - it is written with such heart and soul you feel as if you are right there in the story. This story truly touches your heart - it keeps you enthralled - there is a magic in her stories that takes you back to a time in Europe that makes you feel alive inside - it makes you feel as if you are there and walking down the cobblestone streets. You feel the heartache and the joy of this beautifully written book. I am so glad I got it in hardback - I will read it again and again - this is one that is not to be missed - it truly is a compelling story and for me it is a number 1 in her collection. Tori
A Godsend! September 12, 2009 Deborah A. Bellas My mother-in-law has macular degeneration and cannot see well. She is an avid reader and absolutely adores Danielle Steel. I am commenting on the fact that I gave her the audiobook version of this book. She LOVED it and is listening to it again.
