Product Description In a spellbinding blend of suspense and human drama, Danielle Steel tells a powerful and unusual story of one womanâs journey from darkness into light, as she fights to escape a mesmerizing sociopath who holds her in his thrallâ¦.
Hope Dunne has carved out a name for herself as a top photographer, known the joys of marriage and motherhood, and the heartbreak of loss. In her chic SoHo loft, Hope is content with her life, finding serenity and beauty through the lens of her camera. She isnât looking for a man or excitement. But these things find her when she accepts a last- minute assignment to fly to London at Christmas and photograph one of the worldâs most celebrated writersâan Irish-American author known for novels of thrilling literary darkness.
To Hopeâs surprise, Finn OâNeill exudes warmth and a boyish charm. Enormously successful, he is a perfect counterpoint to Hopeâs quiet, steady graceâand heâs taken instantly by her. He courts her as no one ever has before, whisking her away to his palatial, isolated Irish estate.
Hope finds it all, and him, irresistible. Finnâs magnetism and brilliance are undeniable. But soon cracks begin to appear in his stories: gaps in his history, a few innocent lies, and bouts of jealousy unnerve her. Suddenly Hope is both in love and suspicious, caring and deeply in doubt, and ultimately frightened of the man she loves. Alone, thousands of miles from home, her mind is reeling. Is she just being paranoid? How many lies has he told? Are there more secrets to come? Is it possible that this adoring, attentive manâlike the characters in his novelsâis hiding something even worse? The spell cast by a brilliant sociopath has her trapped in his web, too confused and dazzled to escape as he continues to tighten his grip on her.
With razor-sharp insight, Danielle Steel delivers an unforgettable tale of danger and obsessive love. Fearlessly telling the truth, refusing to look away, Steel proves once again that as an American storyteller she has no peer when she explores the dark secrets that sometimes lurk just below the surface of ordinary lives, writing about men and women and their courage to prevail, in this case, even in the face of evil.

Review of Matters of the Heart August 1, 2009 V. Cournoyer (everywhere, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you are a Danielle Steele fan you will find this to be one of the best of her collection - it is written with such heart and soul you feel as if you are right there in the story. This story truly touches your heart - it keeps you enthralled - there is a magic in her stories that takes you back to a time in Europe that makes you feel alive inside - it makes you feel as if you are there and walking down the cobblestone streets. You feel the heartache and the joy of this beautifully written book. I am so glad I got it in hardback - I will read it again and again - this is one that is not to be missed - it truly is a compelling story and for me it is a number 1 in her collection. Tori
Excellent about taboo matter! July 3, 2009 Sissel M. Østdahl (Norway) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
" Falling in love with a sociopath was one of those experiences you never forgot, if you were lucky enough to survive at all." (ref. page 326)
It all takes place among the rich and privileged, as so often in Danielle Steel's books, but for this story it is actually an advantage.
The matter of involvment with a sociopath is not an easily accepted topic, particularly not so among the educated upper and middle classes. But nowhere are sociopaths likely to do more damage than when they perform their mostly phsycological evils to proud victims in golden cages. Victims staying silent, knowing that their stories will seem too crazy to be believed by any sane person. Among people with less or no education sociopaths are more visible, since their methods are usually of a more physical kind, leaving their victims literally hurt and bleeding.
The first part of the book tells a beautiful story about a coup de foudre between two people in their forties who connect perfectly and plan to get married after having known each other for only four months.
Well recognized photograher Hope Dunne gets an assignment to do a portrait of famous author Finn O'Neill. They fall head over heels in love and soon Hope shares her time between her New York loft and Finn's impressive ancestral home in Ireland. Everything is bliss and simply too good to be true.
After six perfectly happy months, the surface is however starting to crack and Hope's life is soon alternating between joy and suspicion, and slowly turning into terror.
The nightmare this all to perfect love story soon turns into, is scary and as the book says, hard to believe unless one has experienced it oneself.
It is a bold subject Danielle Steel has chosen for this book, which starts out as such an easy read and develops into a scary nightmare very seldom neither written or talked about.
Readers may find it all unbelievable and rather crazy, but "Matters of The Heart" is straight forward and scaringly to the point.
Highly recommended.
A Godsend! September 12, 2009 Deborah A. Bellas My mother-in-law has macular degeneration and cannot see well. She is an avid reader and absolutely adores Danielle Steel. I am commenting on the fact that I gave her the audiobook version of this book. She LOVED it and is listening to it again.

I did like this Danielle Steel book as it was a mystery suspense type. It was her typical story, but with a little bit more suspense to it.
You will enjoy!! July 17, 2009 T. Zeedyk 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you are a Danielle Steel fan as myself, of course you will love this book and will want to read it rather you purchase it or get it from the library. It was a book that was hard to put down and it keep you wondering what was going to happen next. Really enjoyed. If you have never read Danielle Steel this might not be the best of her books to start out with but I think you will still enjoy reading it. She is a wonderful writter and I love all her books
