The best one May 19, 2000 26 out of 31 found this review helpful
I bought this book years ago when my children were born. Five children and twenty five years later, it is my favorite baby gift especially for a first time mother. The book describes three different infants and their temperments so clearly that no matter what kind of a baby you have, you will find your child somewhere in the book. For a first time mother, when variations of childrens sleeping, eating, and temperments are so different, it is reassuring to know that the one in your crib is as healthy and normal as the rest.
Helps the first-time parent January 7, 2000 M. HARDT (Houston, Texas) 21 out of 26 found this review helpful
This book does what few childcare books do: reassures the parent that their child's natural developmental timing is OK. I used this book often to look at the great latitude in development at various ages. The descriptions of the babies and mothers' reactions to them are great.
I read this book years ago, and it is still relavent today. April 29, 1999 20 out of 28 found this review helpful
This book helped me realize that normal is different for every baby. My mother told me I was a bad mother because my baby wasn't developing according to her time table. After reading this book, I realized my son was normal I was a good mother, and he tuned out just fine. I buy this book for every one of my friends expecting a baby and all of them love the book also!
Still very good after a few decades April 26, 2010 Jean-Luc (London, UK) This is not a book about receipes. It is better than that. It tells you stories, as examples, of things babies might do, or not, how they might behave, or not, etc...., a various ages. Do not use this book to tick boxes: use it as one reference to make you think yourself about what you see, and how you may best interact with and support your baby. And if you think the book is outdated, you may want to check how many times the good "receipes" about babies (like sleep on the back, or the tummy, or on the side?) have changed and changed again over the years. Actually we all, today's readers, have surely been raised as babies under "receipes" which today would be "wrong". How are you doing?
Still a great read... May 15, 2010 LostShakerOSalt (Seattle, WA) I read this 31 years ago when my daughter was an infant. Now I'm reading it again as I'm a new grandma!
